LaRue Man Killed After Crashing into School Bus

A LaRue man was killed Monday afternoon when he collided with an Elgin school bus while he was riding an ATV. The Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reports the fatal crash occurred on Monday, February 6, 2012 at 4:21 pm on LaRue-Mount Victory Road, west of Clark Road, in Bowling Green Township.

The crash involved an Elgin Local School District bus driven by Larry Butz, 49, of Mount Victory, and a Polaris Sportsman 500 ATV driven by Thomas Wilson, 48, of LaRue.

The Patrol says the school bus was stopped facing westbound on LaRue-Mount Victory Road, with its red lights flashing, releasing children at a residence. Wilson was traveling westbound on LaRue-Mount Victory Road, was unable to stop, and struck the right rear portion of the school bus.

Wilson’s ATV slid off the right side of the roadway, overturned and he was ejected.

The Patrol says there were two children on the bus while two other children had just been released and were standing outside of the bus. The children were not injured. The driver of the school bus was also uninjured.

Wilson was pronounced deceased at the scene by Assistant Marion County Coroner Craig Thompson. Wilson was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by the Scioto Valley Fire District and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The crash remains under investigation.
